Volvo's Rebranding Strategy: Initiating the 2025 EX40 and EC40 Electric Vehicles

Volvo, renowned for its commitment to electrification, is making strategic moves to streamline its electric vehicle (EV) lineup. In an effort to distinguish its electric models from their gas-powered counterparts and align them with upcoming EV releases, Volvo has announced a renaming initiative.

The XC40 Recharge, Volvo’s compact electric SUV, will now be known as the EX40, while its sleeker counterpart, the C40 Recharge, will bear the name EC40. This change not only differentiates the electric models from their combustion-engine siblings but also aligns them with the naming convention of upcoming electric-only Volvo vehicles.


While the rebranded EX40 and EC40 won’t undergo any physical changes, Volvo is introducing a new performance software package for select markets. This upgrade boosts the peak power output by 33 horsepower for the dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant, enhancing acceleration and responsiveness. Additionally, a new “Performance” drive mode unlocks the full potential of these electric vehicles, providing a peak power of 435 horsepower.


In addition to the renaming initiative, Volvo is introducing Black Editions for the 2025 EX40, EC40, and XC40 models. These editions feature Onyx Black paint, gloss-black trim for the badges, and 20-inch five-spoke wheels, along with a choice of two black interior upholstery options.


Alongside the renaming of electric models, Volvo is simplifying its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) lineup by removing the “Recharge” badging. Instead, plug-in models will be identified solely by the T6 or T8 suffix, indicating the powertrain variant. This streamlined approach aims to provide clarity to customers and aligns with Volvo’s vision for an electrified future.


Volvo’s rebranding strategy reflects its commitment to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry. By renaming its electric models and introducing performance enhancements and Black Editions, Volvo aims to cater to evolving consumer preferences and strengthen its position in the electric vehicle market.
